Thanks to HECE funding the Crafty Lunch Club has delivered a vibrant programme of social events that have made a meaningful difference to members’ wellbeing, confidence and sense of belonging over the last 6 months.

The Crafty Lunch Club is a social and creative group for adults with learning disabilities or physical disabilities. They host a wide range of social and creative activities.

From lively discos to calming sensory sessions, the club has created enjoyable spaces where people can socialise, volunteer and build lasting friendships.

The monthly discos have quickly become the highlight of the calendar, regularly welcoming more than 20 attendees plus care staff. A festive Christmas disco rounded off the year in style, complete with light-up wands, headbands, glasses and mince pies.

Support workers report that attendees are “buzzing” when they leave the discos, talking about how much fun they’ve had all the way home. For many, the events are “the highlight of their month.”

More than just a chance to dance, the discos bring together people from different homes and settings, helping to build new friendships and strengthen community ties.

In addition to the discos, the team introduced quieter sensory sessions in response to feedback that the regular Wednesday Crafty Lunch Club can sometimes feel busy and loud. These smaller sessions, attended by around 10 people plus carers, offer a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

New sensory equipment including puzzles, games, tactile toys and sensory rails with lights, chimes and bells has enhanced the experience.

One regular attendee enjoys the sessions for some peace and quiet, relaxing with a coffee and puzzles, while another particularly looks forward to the hand massages and foot spa.

Although the Community Cafés are currently paused following quieter winter sessions, members continue to volunteer helping with washing up, setting up and clearing away. Volunteers have said it makes them feel part of the team and proud to contribute to their community.

Overall, the expanded social programme has opened up more opportunities for members to get out, connect and thrive. One member shared that, because of the discos and volunteering opportunities, their mental health and confidence have improved.

With friendships forming beyond the sessions and constant questions about when the next disco will be, it’s clear the Crafty Lunch Club is making a lasting impact, and there’s plenty more to look forward to, including a special Valentine’s Disco in the coming weeks.
